MEXICO CITY: The Mexican Government recently informed Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo and Minister of Agriculture Noel Holder that its Embassy in Guyana is giving priority to purchasing Guyana’s paddy.
This was communicated by the Mexican Ambassador to Guyana, His Excellency Ivan Robero Sierra Medel, in a letter which stated that Mexican importers seek the Embassy’s assistance to help match the market needs in Mexico with paddy available in Guyana.
Ambassador Sierra Medel informed the Prime Minister of an initial conference called between Mexican importers and Guyanese rice farmers and millers.
In an effort to promote Guyana’s paddy export, Prime Minister Nagamootoo met with President of Mexico Enrique Peña Nieto and Minister of Agriculture, Jose Calzada.
It was then disclosed to the Prime Minister that Mexican importers, both the private sector and Government agencies are keen on buying Guyana’s paddy.
According to Ambassador Sierra Medel, although rice is produced in Mexico, the country imports close to one million tonnes of rice annually. He also revealed that currently Mexico is diversifying the source of imports.
Minister of Agriculture, Noel Holder is expected to respond to the Mexican offer soon.
