NEW DELHI: Micromax and Spice have decided to roll out Android 5.1 Lollipop for theor Android One devices Micromax Canvas A1 and Spice Dream Uno smartphones this week.

“Your rocking weekend starts today…Spice rolls out Lollipop 5.1 update for Spice Dream Uno users. Check NOW!,” Spice announced on Friday, March 20, on its Facebook page. Judging by the comments to this post, many users have yet to receive the update, but it should nonetheless roll out one of these days.

Micromax, meanwhile, detailed the process of downloading and installing the Android 5.1 Lollipop update to the Canvas A1. According to the post, smartphone owners should first of all make sure they have at least 30 percent battery life on their handset, and connect to Wi-Fi so they don’t incur additional charges. If they haven’t received the update prompt notification, owners can check for the update’s availability by accessing their phone’s Settings menu and checking for system updates. If available, simply download and install the package following the on-screen instructions.

Neither Micromax nor Spice have offered detailed changelogs to note exactly what changes the new Android 5.1 Lollipop will bring to their respective Android One devices. Nevertheless, we already know about some key features and improvements of Android 5.1.

As expected, the latest version of Android will bring some general fixes and improvements to enhance the whole experience, but it will also add some neat new functionality. Android 5.1 will improve security by adding Device Protection, will allow for easier handling of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth toggles from Quick Settings, will fix random app crashes, improve heads-up notifications (swipe up to collapse), add a new “No interruptions until next alarm” option in Priority Mode, and more.

In other words, Android 5.1 is not a major update to the OS, but it will add some neat features and make everything smoother.

Lastly, while Micromax and Spice have announced their plans to update their Android One devices to Android 5.1, Karbonn offered no details yet as to when its Sparkle V Android One handset will get the same treatment.
