WASHINGTON: Microsoft’s Operating Systems Group has revealed that a wide new range of Lumia handsets will be compatible with the coming test build of the new Windows 10 Mobile operating system.
A select few handset owners got a chance to try out Windows 10 Mobile when Microsoft released the initial test build of its new operating system in February of this year. However, only a small selection of Windows Phones were compatible with the test build; anyone not owning a Lumia 830, 730, 638, 636, 635 or 630 was simply left behind while their friends and neighbors got to check out all the new bells and whistles for the upcoming mobile OS.
Microsoft officials at the time said that the highly select list of handsets was due to how few Lumia phones on the market could support the installation process, thanks to the size of the update. However, this new test build have found a way around this limitation and has been certified to be available to the lion’s share of Nokia handsets running Windows Phone operating systems. To that end, Microsoft released a full list in a blog post on Friday with a massive number of Lumia handset models, many of which are dual SIM ones.
In fact, the only glaring omission from the list happens to be the Lumia 930. For now, the handset has a bug that’s unique to it that has been preventing Microsoft from installing Windows 10 Mobile; the Redmond-based company is hard at work trying to crack that particular nut.
Gabe Aul, the director of the Windows Insider program at Microsoft, said that while he couldn’t provide a definite date for the new build, but he did say that his team is highly confident that the new coding that has enabled the test version of Windows 10 Mobile to spread to so many newer devices will work like a charm. Aul added that there was at least another week of engineering work before the test build will be available for the larger device list.
Microsoft has indicated that Windows 10 is set to debut either late summer or early fall of 2015.
