DUBAI: The Ministry of Public Works has launched ‘Cleaning Ports’ initiative through which 25 divers from the Emirates Diving Centre participated by diving to the bottom of Ajman ports in search of harmful wastes polluting the waters.

The initiative, which is organised by the ministry, aims at raising environmental awareness, promoting sustainable environmental standards and preserving the country’s legacy in this specific area.

Zahra Al Aboudi, Undersecretary at the Ministry of Public Works, said the ministry launched the initiative to constantly provide the public with better living standards. She added that individuals are encouraged to adopt certain behaviours that will help establish a healthy environment until it becomes part of their lifestyle.

Al Aboudi pointed out that the ministry will develop mechanisms that will contribute to saving energy and encourage the use of both renewable energy and green technology. Reduction of carbon footprint and greenhouse gasses will help create an environment friendly society.

Shaikh Mohammad Bin Abdullah Al Nuaimi, Chairman of Ajman Department for Ports and Customs, encouraged the spread of publica awareness on both water and land pollution.

“The UAE has shown its commitment and concern about the matter through its accession to most regional and international conventions which aim at preserving the environment. Also, it has passed an Environment Protection Act and has developed a national strategy serving as an action plan for sustainability,” Al Nuaimi said.

He also stressed on the importance of protecting the environment and ensuring the cleanliness of the country’s ports. The country’s vision includes becoming the leading country in terms of port infrastructure quality by 2021. The UAE was ranked first regionally and third globally in the field of port infrastructure for 2014-2015.
