MEXICO: Did you know that an estimated one billion birds die each year from something called “fatal light attraction?” Put simply, it’s when birds get distracted by overwhelmingly bright city lights and crash into buildings.
Well, the state of New York has decided to do something about it. Governor Andrew Cuomo has ordered the state to dim its bright outdoor lighting each evening at eleven o’clock, leaving the lights off until sunrise the next morning.
“This is a simple step to help protect these migrating birds that make their home in New York’s forests, lakes and rivers,” Cuomo said in a statement. “I encourage anyone interested in learning more about New York’s birds and their migrations to visit the new I Love NY Birding website.”
The program will be in effect April 15 through May 31 and again on August 15 through November 15, peak migration periods for birds making the Atlantic Flyway route through the state.
Several other major city landmarks are taking part in the National Audubon Society’s Lights Out program, including the Rockefeller Centre, Chrysler Building and Time Warner Centre.
