WELLINGTON: Four Asian tourists could face life in prison after allegedly being caught trying to smuggle over 12 kilograms of methamphetamine into New Zealand.
New Zealand Customs say two men and two women, in their early to mid-twenties, appeared in the Manukau District Court today, each charged with importation and possession of a class A controlled drug.
They remain in custody until their next court appearance.
Customs officers stopped the group at Auckland International Airport on Saturday, and an expected combined weight of over 12 kilograms of methamphetamine was allegedly located hidden in their suitcases.
The alleged haul could have a street value of around $12 million.
