BRASILIA: Nokia Networks and Portugal Telecom-owned mobile operator Oi will partner in the development of Internet of Things (IoT) projects in Brazil.
Both companies will be working jointly on initiatives focused on LTE-M technologies (a 4G specification developed for machine connectivity), at a facility to be launched in the first quarter of 2016 in Rio de Janeiro.
The companies have just signed a memorandum of understanding about the project and have yet to form a working group to study opportunities in the IoT field, though both companies have said that the joint pool of resources will be invested in areas such as agribusiness, connected cars and e-health, as well as smart housing and cities.
Other mobile companies are looking to exploit opportunities within IoT in Brazil, such as Ericsson, who announced a research partnership on the development of IoT and 5G products and services with América Móvil.
The Brazilian government is also working on the creation of policies focused on machine to machine (M2M) and IoT technologies. One of the group’s goals is to “connect isolated M2M and IoT initiatives” that are currently going on in Brazil.
