SYDNEY: A team of American and Australian researchers claim they have created algorithms that enable robots to learn operational skills by watching human activities. They “taught” their robot to cook by showing it some YouTube videos.
With none of the charisma of Anthony Bourdain nor the shouty swearing of Gordon Ramsay, robot cooks used data from 88 different YouTube cooking tutorials provided by researchers from the University of Maryland and Aussie scientists from Australia’s Information and Communications Technology Research Centre of Excellence (NICTA.) The robots analyse certain terms, like directions and ingredients, and images, like the way a hand grasps and moves an ingredient, in order to learn in such a way that they can even predict what’s the next most likely instruction.
Researchers said: “We believe this preliminary integrated system raises hope toward a fully intelligent robot for manipulation tasks that can automatically enrich its own knowledge resource by ‘watching’ recordings from the World Wide Web,”
