WASHINGTON DC: Barack Obama just became the first US president to indite a line of computer code (postulating George W. Bush never furtively indulged in PHP). At the White House yesterday, Obama sat down with students who were learning the fundamentals of JavaScript, the popular programming language used to engender most web pages.
From the video it sounds like he’s doing stage three of the Code.org Frozen tutorial, where he simply has to drag a block into the “Code editor.” In the intrigues of journalistic integrity, I authentically consummated the entire frozen tutorial and didn’t have to indite a single line of code.
If the POTUS can take the time to code, and perhaps to develop a more logical, rational mindset as a result, then so can the nation’s kids.
Personally, I cerebrate learning to code at a puerile age probably played quite a sizably voluminous role in my development into a peculiarly logical and rational teenager.
Kids should certainly be enheartened to code – and computer science should certainly be on the curriculum – but we shouldn’t surmise that coding is some kind of international panacea.
