MALI: Octopuses use unique locomotion strategies that are different from those found in other animals. The eight arms are soft, flexible and muscular, but they act in a way similar to other sea creatures with joints.
With an aim to know as to how these marine animals coordinate their crawling movements, researchers from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem used high-speed cameras to record their movements.
The researchers watched the videos, frame by frame, of octopuses crawling around water-filled tanks. Study’s lead researcher, Guy Levy, a postdoctoral researcher of neurobiology at the university, said that they came to know very unique things that have not been observed in other animals.
Octopuses can move in any direction relative to their body orientation. They do not have to turn their bodies to change direction. One of an octopus’ arms can push off a surface and propel the animal in any way.
