Pak, US facing similar challenges along land borders: Chief Collector Wasif Memon

KARACHI: Chief Collector of Customs Enforcement (South) Dr Wasif Ali Memon has said that US and Pakistan law enforcement agencies face peculiar and similar challenges along their land borders during a training session held at DGTR (Customs), Karachi

According to the details, two weeks training from 11th November to 22nd November 22, 2019 on “Customs Enforcement” was organized by Directorate General of Training & Research (Customs), in collaboration with US Department of State, Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement and Department of Homeland Security.

While addressing to the participants Chief Collector of Customs Enforcement (South) Dr Wasif Ali Memon appreciated the DGTR and the US Department of State and Department of Homeland Security for successfully conducting two weeks training.

He highlighted that training provide an excellent opportunity to newly inducted trainee officers to benefit from the experience of international law enforcement agencies. He highlighted that US and Pakistan law enforcement agencies face peculiar and similar challenges along their land borders and thus are uniquely placed to share their experience to combat illicit movement of goods, narcotics and people.

He informed the gathering that this training was part of broader cooperation between Pakistan Customs and US Consulate General in Karachi and expressed the hope that the scope of such collaboration would be enhanced in future. Moreover, the training is aligned with broader vision of the government for introduction of reforms in FBR and recently approved Border Management Initiative (BMI).

He expressed the hope that this will also be extended to the training and skill enhancement of the in service officers, officials and train the trainer programas well.

Earlier, Director General Customs Training Faiz Ahmad in his welcome address highlighted the modern challenges of customs administration and the change in the role of Pakistan Customs. He also informed the audience regarding the current changes in specialized training program and various international training imparted to trainee officer with international agencies like UNODC, WCO, DEA, INL and HSI. He extended gratitude to the trainers of HSI, CBP and INL attaché US Consulate General Karachi.

The Acting Consul General His Excellency Jack Hillmeyer expressed his appreciations for trainers from HSI and CBP as well as DGTR for successfully arranging the two weeks training. He remarked that training was reflective of the US commitment to assist friendly countries in creating a safer and more secure trading environment.
