Pakistan ratifies 5 UN conventions, treaties to curb narcotics

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has ratified five United Nations (UN) conventions and regional bilateral treaties on narcotics control.

A source in the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) told Customs Today on Thursday that the conventions and treaties included, Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs 1961 as amended by the 1972 Protocol, United Nations (UN) Convention on Psychotropic Substances 1971, United Nations (UN) Convention Against Illicit Trafficking in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances 1988 and subsequent United Nations (UN) resolutions, in particular the United Nations(UN) General Assembly’s 20th Special Session Resolution S-20/4B, South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Convention on Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances 1990 and  Protocol on Drug Matters with Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) countries.

The source also said that Pakistan had also signed extradition treaty with 28 countries including, Algeria, Argentina, Australia, Belgium, China, Columbia, Cuba, Denmark, Ecuador, Egypt, France, Greece, Iraq, Italy, Liberia, Luxembourg, Maldives, Monaco, Netherlands, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Sen Marino, Switzerland, Turkey, the UAE, the US, Uzbekistan and Yugoslavia.

“The extradition treaty enables Pakistan to exchange wanted criminals involved in drug trafficking with these countries” the source added.

Similarly, the source said that Pakistan has signed memorandum of understanding on cooperation in checking narcotics trafficking with thirty countries, including Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Brazil, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, China, Egypt, Greece, Australia, Indonesia, Iran, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Lao People’s Democratic, Nigeria, Philippines, Romania, Russia, Singapore, Tajikistan, Sri Lanka, Syria, Thailand, Turkey, UAE, Uzbekistan, USA and India.
