WASHINGTON: Despite the launch of Windows 10, it seems the PC market is still on a decline. According to the latest figures from market research firm Gartner, PC shipments have seen a 7.7 percent decline in the third quarter of 2015. Desktops market share continues to decline while the segment which deals with ultrabooks and notebooks, such as Macbook Air and Surface Pro, also saw a decline in the shipments.
Lenovo continues to lead the PC manufacturers charts, but it’s has seen a decline compared to the same quarter last year. The China-based company had a market share of 20.3 percent, but compared to last year, it has seen a 4 percent decline in its shipments. The second spot is captured by HP, but the shipments aren’t too pleasing for it as well — it’s shipments also declined by 4 percent year-on-year. The remaining top five contenders include Dell, Apple and Acer. In fact, only Dell and Apple saw a small increase in it’s shipments, 0.5 and 1.5 percent respectively.
In the United States, the top spot is captured by HP with a 27.8 percent share while Dell and Apple are on the second and third spot respectively.
Microsoft also released the latest Windows 10 operating system back in July, and since then, we’ve seen a number of Windows 10 devices and laptops. But, it seems the new operating system didn’t have a big impact on the sales of PCs and desktops. Gartner analysts, however, said that the launch of the new operating system and devices should pick up its pace in the fourth quarter of 2015 as the focus in this quarter was to make sure that existing devices are running the new operating system.
