Piracy is big problem around the world, Netflix aims to fix global concern over privacy

SYDNEY: Netflix set to launch in Australia on March 24, Australian customers are being encouraged to continue to use the US version of Netflix instead of the watered down Australian service.

Australian Netflix subscribers will have access to an initial estimated 1600 titles. Why limit your entertainment because of geolocation when you can use the UnblockUs service to gain access to the entire global Netflix library of over 15,000 streaming titles.

With Netflix only a week away from launching in Australia, CEO Reed Hastings has outlined his position on piracy and VPN usage.

“I doubt that,” said Hastings when Gizmodo raised the idea that Australia’s own Attorney-General thinks we’re a nation of pirates.

“Piracy is really the problem around the world. The VPN scenario is someone who wants to pay and can’t quite pay. The basic solution is for Netflix to get global and have its content be the same all around the world so there’s no incentive to [use a VPN]. Then we can work on the more important part which is piracy.”

“The key thing about piracy is that some fraction of it is because [users] couldn’t get the content. That part we can fix. Some part of piracy however is because they just don’t want to pay. That’s a harder part. As an industry, we need to fix global content.”

Hastings comments come at a time when the Australian Government is pushing a crackdown on content piracy, with a new ‘three-strikes’ law set to arrive soon.

Remember, Netflix in Australia will be unmetered if you’re with iiNet, Internode, Westnet, Adam, or any of the other iiNet Group ISPs!
