WARSAW: Friday, 9 June, was observed as Tax Freedom Day in Poland, according to experts from the Adam Smith think-tank in Warsaw.
It marks the day on which Poles worked enough hours and earned enough income to pay all their taxes for the year.
Last year Tax Freedom Day fell on 15 June, and in 1994 it was 1 July.
Andrzej Sadowski from the Adam Smith Institute said that Poles pay a similar amount in taxes to other nations but Poland should work on more efficient spending.
He said that Poles pay double for some services by, for instance, contributing through taxes to public healthcare and education while at the same time paying for private health insurance and private schools and tutoring.
Tax Freedom Day was first calculated in the US in 1900 – when the day was in late January.
