Production of major crops increased in 2014: Record 19.7m tonnes wheat production target achieved

ISLAMABAD: Punjab Agriculture Department spokesman has said that the production of important crops has increased considerably in the year 2014.

Last year record 19.7 million tons of wheat production was achieved whereas the production obtained in year 2007-08 was only 15.6 million tons. Despite the unfavourable weather cotton production was also increased up to 99 lakh bales and was far higher than production of previous year of 91.5 lakh bales. Production of rice was also increased up to 35.5 lakh tons which surpassed 34.8 lakh tons of production obtained in the last year.

Similarly production of sugarcane, maize, fruits and vegetables was also increased despite the fact that last year agriculture crops on 8 lakh acres were destroyed due to heavy flood.

During year 2014, 0.67 million tons of basmati rice amounting to Rs 74.6 billion was exported whereas the rice amounting to 148.3 billion rupees of other rice varieties was also exported.

The total rice export amounting to Rs 220.9 billion was achieved. Similarly, 3 lakh 53 thousand tons of kinno amounting to Rs 15.7 billion and 86 thousand tons of mangoes amounting to Rs 4.9 billion were also exported.

The spokesman has attributed the increase in production to the hard work of the farmer, technological package given by the agricultural scientists and farmer friendly policies of the government.

ITU seminar: Information Technology University (ITU) organised a seminar on “Wireless Sensor Networks Application & Automotive Systems”.

The seminar was conducted by Dr Arslan Munir, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), who elaborated on the methodology behind networking together parallel and embedded systems as well as his research contributions in this domain.

The seminar was attended by IT professionals and graduate-level students belonging to various educational institutions.

ITU Vice Chancellor Dr Umar Saif said this seminar was a crucial step in familiarising professionals with the disruption awaiting industries such as automotive and educational technology.

Sami Khan, the head of ITU’s Department of Events and Industrial Training, said the seminar was in line with his department’s aim of helping students and professionals.
