MULTAN: The provincial government is launching a programme from June 15 to train farmers at grass-root level in killing fruit fly in mango orchards.
This was disclosed by Parliamentary Secretary on Agriculture MPA Rana Ijaz Ahmad Noon, while talking to a group of mango farmers. The training programme would be held at union council, tehsil and district level in mango growing areas to increase export volume from Punjab.
Rana Ijaz said that all the EDOs agriculture had been issued instructions to strictly implement the detailed schedule of farmers’ training on controlling fruit fly through chemical, cultural and biological methods.
Agriculture officials (extension) would be responsible to hold training programmes at Markaz level, deputy district officer agriculture (extension) at tehsil level, and district officer agriculture (extension) at district level.
Farmers would also be given training on Phytosanitary Measures i.e to keep the area under plants clean, to collect the rotten or fallen fruit and bury it, and place the fruit on hard floor.
Farmers will also get information and training on utilizing pheromone traps including Methyl Eugenol and Protein Hydrolysate to kill male and female fruit fly.
