Qatar Airport Customs seizes illicit 3kg marijuana

DOHA: Qatar Airport Customs has seized an amount of marijuana weighing approximately 3 kg here the other day. The drug was hidden in a stealth way inside a box among luggage of an Asian passenger.

A Customs officer suspected the behavior of a passenger on board coming from a direct flight from an Asian country at the baggage screening devices. That officer made a sign to the officer in the customs hall to make ready for searching the passenger. That officer managed to find the seized amount wrapped in plastic bags.

Mr. Khaled Hamad Rashed Al Ka’abi, in charge of the Customs Department at the Airport indicated that a seizure report was drawn up in respect of that incident and the seized items were surrendered to the security authorities for taking the legal procedures and conducting the relevant investigations the matter. He highlighted that in case of seizing any type of drugs, the Drug Enforcement Administration is advised to take all relevant measures and referring the matter after that to the Public Prosecution. The General Authority of Customs will follow up the matter with the security authorities afterwards.

Mr. Al Ka’abi indicated that the General Authority of Customs seizes great amounts of prohibited substances hidden in a stealth and unexpected manner, such as hashish, drug tablets, opium, cocaine, etc. He highlighted the craft and intelligence of the Customs personnel in recognizing the new methods of hiding prohibited items. He further stressed that they receive continuous training at the hands of professional experts in the industry in detecting all types of trafficking.
