Qatar delegation takes part in Arab Economic and Social Council meeting

DOHA: Qatar participated in the meetings of the 95th Ordinary Session of the Economic and Social Council of the Arab League, which concluded at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo here the other day.

The Qatari delegation was headed by Sultan bin Rashid Al Khater, Undersecretary at the Ministry of Economy and Commerce.

The meeting discussed draft decisions prepared by both the social and economic committees.

Some of the important topics on agenda of the meetings held from February 15 to 19 included implementation of the resolutions issued by the Council during its previous (94th) meeting such as developments relating to the Greater Arab Free Trade Zone, pan-Arab customs union, investments in Arab countries, relations with international economic blocs, the unification of Arab building codes and a pan-Arab agreement on maritime transport of passengers and goods.

Among the other topics of discussion during the meetings included pan-Arab cooperation on administrative development, preservation of Arab urban heritage, civil aviation, agriculture and fisheries.

The meeting also discussed the follow-up of the implementation of the economic aspects of Lima declarations issued by Arab-South American nations held in Peru’s largest city in 2012. The Lima declaration aims at enhancing economic ties between the two blocks. The meeting also discussed the follow-up of the decisions taken during the third round of the Arab-African Summit which was held from November 19-20, 2013 in Kuwait.
