WASHINGTON: Living on Mars might prove safe enough for future colonists, but a new study shows that radiation exposure on the journey to the Red Planet may be high enough to cause brain damage, jeopardizing any mission that sets out.
Here on Earth, we’re reasonably safe from exposure to cosmic rays. In orbit, astronauts can live worry free for some time on the International Space Station before they exceed exposure limits. Even on Mars, NASA’s Curiosity rover determined that the surface of the Red Planet is probably just as safe as being on the International Space Station. Earth’s atmosphere and magnetic field, and even Mars’ thin atmosphere at lower elevation, are good shields against exposure.
