Rijeka port authority has completed the first phase of the construction of the Zagreb Deep Sea Container Terminal on May 23, with a total investment of €112.5 million ($126 million), of which €84 million ($94.1 million) was covered by a World Bank loan and €28.5 million ($31.9 million) was allocated from the Croatian state budget.

The Zagreb DSCT was implemented within the Rijeka Gateway project which is aimed at upgrading the Rijeka transport and infrastructure network. Rijeka port authority is now looking for a private partner for the development and operations of the terminal.

With the terminal, Rijeka port aims to take advantage of the deep water and sheltered berths with a depth exceeding 20 meters at the western part of the largest Croatian seaport. This will help Rijeka to attract the latest generation vessels and supplement the container handling capacity of the existing Adriatic Gate Container Terminal.

In the initial stage, the terminal will be 400 metres long, whereas the future terminal operator is expected to expand up to 680 metres in the second stage. The Rijeka port authority is due to select the concessionaire by September.
