MUMBAI: The rupee gained 17 paisa at 63.41 against the dollar at 10.55 a.m. local time.
The domestic unit opened 6 paise strong at 63.52 per dollar against the previous close of 63.58 in early trade at the Interbank Foreign Exchange today on fresh selling of the US currency by exporters amid weakness in the dollar index overseas.
It hovered in the range of 63.39 and 63.56 in the morning trade.
Forex dealers said besides selling of the American currency by exporters and banks, firm domestic stock market supported the rupee but the dollar’s strength against other currencies overseas, limited the gains.
The rupee had ended with a fall of 16 paise at over one-week low of 63.57 against the greenback in yesterday’s trade.
Call rates, bond yields
Yields on the benchmark 8.40 per cent government security, which matures in 2024, softened a tad to 7.88 per cent against the previous close of 7.89 per cent.
Prices fell to 103.24 from 103.31. Bond prices and yields move in opposite directions.
The inter-bank call money rate, the rate at which banks borrow from each other to overcome liquidity mismatches, opened higher at 8.15 per cent against the previous close of 7.50 per cent.
