LONDON: Russian and American astronauts have successfully reached the International Space Station for a landmark year-long stay in space. Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko and US astronaut Scott Kelly, along with Russia’s Gennady Pedalka, blasted off from Kazakhstan in a Soyuz capsule on Friday. Kornienko and Kelly will spend a year in space in order to gain insights into changes experienced by the human body. The data is vital for a future mission to Mars, which will see astronauts in space for almost two years.
“Scott Kelly’s mission is critical to advancing the administration’s plan to send humans on a journey to Mars,” said NASA Administrator Charles Bolden. “We’ll gain new, detailed insights on the ways long-duration spaceflight affects the human body.” In an interesting twist, Kelly’s twin brother Mark (also an astronaut) will also take part in experiments back on Earth.
