UYUNI: Bolivia is home to Salar de Uyuni, the world’s biggest salt flat with an extension of 12,000 km. But before salt like this makes it to your table, Bolivian artisans honour the profusion of this natural source by using it to make all manners of art. Behold the Luna Salada hotel, made completely of salt – brick by brick, from top to bottom.
The hotel’s basic structure is built from salt bricks, but Luna Salada is taking the salt-living experience to the next level. The floor is made of salt, the beds are built from salt, even the restaurant’s dining table is a slab of all-natural salt.
Naturally, everything prepared in what looks like a glorious kitchen uses salt from just outside the hotel’s front door.
Surrounded by breathtaking views of Salar de Uyuni and Bolivia beyond, Luna Salada’s staff face many challenges in operating a hotel so vulnerable to weather and corrosion.
In this video, Manager Dario Lora takes you behind the superficial salt sculpture and into the spirit of the salt hotel.
