SEOUL: Samsung and LG are working on iris scanner authentication technology for Galaxy S7, LG G5. Rumors of the iris scanner have been doing rounds even before Samsung’s Galaxy S5 was released.

The Korean publisher notes that iris authentication systems are far more secure than fingerprint scanners, making them perfect for mobile payment. Samsung has already announced its mobile payment service Samsung Pay while Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) has unveiled Android Pay for Android Smartphones. Last month, rumors emerging out of South Korea indicated that LG’s next flagship will feature an iris eye scanner.

If the reports of iris scanner in the Galaxy S7 and LG G5 are true, these devices will be far more secure for users. Samsung has been working with the Stanford Research Institute to bring the iris recognition system to Smartphones. The Stanford Research Institute claims that the iris technology is at least 1,000 times more accurate than the fingerprint scanner.

Galaxy S7 may feature a flexible display

The iris scanner uses a Smartphone’s front camera to scan the eyes of the owner. Then it compares it with biometric data stored by the source. LG Electronics has partnered with biometric technology company Irience to store and maintain the biometric data. Both the Galaxy S7 and LG G5 are expected to arrive in the first half of 2016. The devices are likely still in the early stages of development. So, it is difficult to say whether the feature has been finalized for either device.

LG G5 is rumored to feature a 20MP main camera, the ability to capture 3D images, in-build wireless charging technology and a 4K display. Samsung’s Galaxy S7 will reportedly come with a foldable display. Korean website ETNews reported in March that Samsung had asked its display supplier to prepare for supplying 8 million flexible Smartphone display panels a month.
