SAO PAULO: A ship carrying 5,000 head of cattle sank in a river in Para, a state in the Brazilian Amazon, killing the majority of the animals, who were bound for Lebanon, maritime officials said, adding that the crew survived.
The Lebanese-flagged Haidar hit one of the platforms in Porto de Vila de Conde in Barbacena, a city on the Para River.
The port is one of the main export terminals for Brazilian cattle.
The majority of the cattle drowned because they were in the ship’s hold, while some got out and were rescued by nearby ships.
Police are investigating the cause of the shipwreck and environmental damage caused by a fuel leak from the vessel.
