ISLAMABAD: Disclosing that Sindh has lost more than 2 million acres of its lands in coastal areas due to sea intrusion, a Senate body has drawn the attention of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to the intrusion of Arabian Sea into coastal areas of Pakistan.
Senate Standing Committee on Science and Technology Chairman Prof Sajid Mir in a letter addressed to the prime minister said that the saltwater intrusion was a serious matter and needed urgent attention. It has been written on the basis of recommendations made at a meeting of the committee held in February.
The committee members have recommended involvement of departments, such as World Wide Fund (WWF), National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the United Nations Environment Programme and Pakistan Navy, for conducting studies to find a solution to this environmental threat.
