WASHINGTON: Scientists believe a hole in the roof of a West Australian workshop could have been ripped open by the sonic boom of the meteorite that streaked through the city’s skies earlier this week.
The workshop is in Three Springs, a small inland town just over 300km north of Perth, but one analyst told 9NEWS they were “80 percent certain” the damage was indirectly caused by the meteorite that had the capital abuzz when it flashed in the sky on Monday.
The mechanic who used the workshop discovered a fragment of jagged, metallic debris, which will now be tested by researchers.
He originally believed the fragment had caused the hole in his roof in its rapid descent to earth, but scientists now think it was the force of the sonic boom.
Researchers from Curtin University are trying to triangulate the meteorite’s path to discover its final location, but it is possible the object burned up in the atmosphere.
