CANBERRA: US renewables developer SunEdison Inc (NYSE:SUNE) is planning to instal in Australia some 50 MW of rooftop photovoltaic (PV) capacity in the next 12 months, Bloomberg said Friday.

The company will focus particularly on commercial projects at airports, universities and retirement homes, local managing director, Jeremy Rich, said in a phone interview with the news agency. SunEdison is interested in acquisitions in the country, as well.

Thanks to the abundant solar resources in Australia, PV systems play an important part in lowering the electricity bills for locals, which are usually very high, the official was quoted as saying. Among other factors to capture SunEdison’s attention are the local energy storage prospects.

The firm entered the Australian market by acquiring domestic installation company Energy Matters Group in 2014. As part of its expansion strategy, SunEdison’s team in the country is expected to jump to roughly 50 people, according to the report.
