NEW YORK: In its new status as the third-largest U.S. phone carrier, T-Mobile Inc is kind of striking when the iron is still hot. The company is gifting its subscribers a free tablet device and all they have to pay is the sales tax attached to the Alcatel OneTouch PIXI 7 tablet. The qualification to get the free tablet is adding a tablet plan to your T-Mobile account.

T-Mobile Inc (NYSE:TMUS) tries to show itself as the generous phone carrier that everyone who is keen on saving some money needs. Already, the company is trying to push reforms in the U.S. mobile communications space with its Un-carrier strategy, which eliminates restrictive mobile plans. In the latest move, the company has set aside some units of Alcatel OneTouch PIXI 7 tablet to give away to eligible subscribers.

Initially, the offer will only be available to existing T-Mobile subscribers and will extend to new customers later this month. However, the offer remains as long as stock lasts, and no one knows how many Alcatel OneTouch PIXI 7 devices the carrier has set aside for the mission.

Back-to-school offer

From the look of things, T-Mobile’s tablet offering seems to target back-to-school shoppers, and the move is certainly going to cause major waves. In the same spirit of back-to-school deals, Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) is also allowing students to enjoy Prime for free for six months.

What about PIXI 7?

While PIXI 7 may not match those high-end tablets like Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s iPads. However, this entry-level tablet isn’t bad. PIXI 7 boasts a 7-inch display and 1024 by 600 pixels in resolution. The device ships with a 3240mAh battery and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor.

The PIXI 7 comes with 1.2GHz CPU, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of expandable internal storage space. You get a 2MP front shooter with PIXI 7 and a secondary front camera giving 0.3MP. The tablet runs Android 4.4 KitKat and supports 4G LTE connectivity.

T-Mobile is running the Alcatel OneTouch PIXI 7 promotion under the “Get a Tablet on Us”.

T-Mobile jumps in ranking

T-Mobile Inc (NYSE:TMUS) elevated its profile, becoming the U.S. No. 3 carrier with 58.9 million subscribers. It dethroned Sprint Corp (NYSE:S), which has 57 million subscribers from the third-place, and T-Mobile is aiming higher.
