TAIPEI: The Customs Department of Taiwan has arrested a British-Chinese suspect for attempting to smuggle the drugs to Taiwan.
The suspect identified only as “Dan” was arrested at a post office at Taipei City’s Daan District as he just finished sending two bags of pineapple cakes to the United Kingdom.
During questioning, Dan confessed to investigators that he had put ketamine inside the cakes in an attempt to smuggle the narcotics overseas, the CIB said.
Further tests also confirmed that over 2 kilograms of ketamine were found in the cakes, it added.
The case is now being investigated by the Taipei District Prosecutors Office.
The CIB said Dan has been put on the wanted list by local authorities after he fled Taiwan in 2011 before he was supposed to begin his four years and eight months prison term for drug-trafficking.
The suspect has continued to return to Taiwan by holding UK passports in different names over the past years and continued to engage in drug-smuggling, it noted.
He visited Taiwan again on Dec. 9 and local authorities had been keeping very close tabs on his every move since that time, according to police.
