Taiwan leads with 50% share in total aquatic products export in 2014

TAIPEI: About 50% of the total imported aquatic products via Xiamen Port were from Taiwan, followed by Indonesia with 40% and other regions with 10%.

According to statistics released, the average aquatic product consumption of Xiamen residents is 35kg per person a year, however, about 80% of seafood sold in Xiamen were imported from other regions.

The Tongyi Wharf in the Dongdu Port area has become Fujian’s main dock for imported aquatic products from Taiwan. The Dongdu Port is among the first batch of designated ports that received national approval to import chilled aquatic products.

 

Of all the imported aquatic products, saury is the most popular product, which has favorable prices and high protein. In 2014, the import of saury via Dongdu Port reached 19,300 tons with a value of 14.967 million US dollars.

In 2014, a total of 1,557 batches of aquatic products were imported via the Dongdu Port, which is 68,800 tons in weight and worth 81.102 million US dollars.

According to staff at the Dongdu Port, the catch of saury in Taiwan has taken the lead in the globe for two consecutive years.

The import of frozen squid saw fast growth in 2014, with a year-on-year increase of 1200%.
