New Delhi: Taiwan has developed an electric scooter with cooperation of HTC that will hit Taipei City this summer. The all-electric scooter, dubbed Smartscooter, uses batteries that can be swapped at the company kiosks.

The environment-friendly scooter was announced at the CES earlier this year but the launch date or location was unannounced till now. The company behind the innovative bike is founded by former HTC staffers and funded in part by HTC co-founder Cher Wang.

A report in The Verge noted that the company is opening a retail store in Taipei this week, where potential customers will be educated about the product. Users are required to subscribe to a plan that lets them swap the Smartscooter batteries in the city.

Gogoro is also launching a pilot program for 100 riders to beta test the scooter and its infrastructure prior to its summer launch.

Price of the Smartscooter isn’t official yet, however, the company has said that it will sell for roughly the same as a competing gas scooter as the very expensive batteries aren’t included and instead given on a subscription plan in lieu of gasoline.
