TOKYO: Tokyo stocks started lower in early trade on Thursday, because of weak machinery orders data in October released just before the market opening which destabilized investors hopes.
At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was down 301. 28 points, or 1.73 percent, from Wednesday to 17,111.30.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange lost 22.72 points, or 1.61 percent, to 1,384. 11.
Major decliners included brokerage, marine transport and steel issues.
