TOKYO: Toyota has introduced a new 174bhp 2.8-litre D-4D diesel engine to the Land Cruiser range. Replacing the old 3.0-litre diesel, the new diesel motor is slightly down on power over the engine it replaces – but it’s more fuel-efficient.

The 2.8-litre diesel produces 174bhp and 450Nm of torque when paired with the new six-speed automatic gearbox, which replaces the old five-speed transmission.

Toyota claims a nine per boost in economy, with figures of 39.2mpg and 194g/km. A six-speed manual gearbox is also available with the new engine, but going for that option means the engine produces slightly less torque, at 420Nm.

Other updates to the Land Cruiser include the reintroduction of the five-door, seven-seat entry-level Active model, while all Land Cruisers now come equipped with DAB radio as standard.

Toyota’s new ‘Touch 2 with Go’ multimedia system is a £750 option on Active models, but standard on Icon and Invincible trims.

Additional options include a Safety pack (£2,635) which features Active Cruise Control, Lane Change Assist and Multi-Terrain Monitor Cameras that gives a 360 degrees view of the vehicle’s immediate surroundings.

The Safety pack comes as standard on the top spec models which also gain a more sophisticated Touch 2 Go Plus infotainment system which features voice command recognition, 3D city mapping and text to speech function.

Prices for the updated range start from £35,895 and rise to £54,895. You’ll be able to order one on 1 July.
