TAIPEI: Two men from Taiwan face life in an Australian prison after they were arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle 12 kg of methamphetamine hidden inside machinery from China, officials said here the other day.
Customs officers found the drugs inside a shipment of “Torque Testers” which arrived in Sydney, Federal police then substituted the drugs with another substance and followed the delivery to a Sydney home where they arrested two men from Taiwan, aged 31 and 24, respectively.
Regional Commander NSW Tim Fitzgerald of the customs said technology was helping authorities detect more illegal drug shipments.
“Customs and Border Protection officers are highly trained to detect concealments of illegal and prohibited goods. With the technology available, even the most sophisticated concealments are being detected,” Fitzgerald said.
“If these men are found guilty, they could face life imprisonment.”
