UK customs seizes 41kg of gold worth Rs 10 crore smuggled in cargo planes

LONDON: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has waged a new battle  to dig out gold from cargoes of DVD players, mixer grinders, emergency lights and other gadgets.

And this battle is going on at different cargo terminals of the airports in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata among other places across India.

The precious yellow metal is getting smuggled through household gadgets that are being sent by air as part of consignments.

A recent raid by the Directorate sleuths unearthed this dark reality of gold smuggling. About 41kg of gold, worth Rs 10 crore, was seized by the DRI officials during the raid that went on till the wee hours.

“In the last week of March, DRI officials carried out a special drive at the IGI Airport’s cargo terminal where they seized 41kg of gold worth Rs 10 crore.

“The drive lasted for almost eight hours and ended at 5am. During these eight hours, gold was recovered from different consignments,” a senior DRI official said.
