NEW YORK: U.K. stocks extended an advance, tracking gains in global equities, as banks and energy producers climbed.
HSBC Holdings Plc, the stock with the biggest weighting on the FTSE 100 Index, added 2.3 percent, while Barclays Plc rose 2.1 percent. Royal Dutch Shell Plc and BP Plc advanced 1.5 percent or more. Amlin Plc surged 33 percent after MS&AD Insurance Group Holdings Inc. agreed to buy it.
The FTSE 100 added 1.3 percent at 9:23 a.m. in London, as all but three stocks advanced. The gauge tumbled last week amid concern over a China slowdown and an impending Federal Reserve rate increase. The broader FTSE All-Share Index gained 1.2 percent today and Ireland’s ISEQ Index rose 0.7 percent.
