FRANCE: The military has been doing some secretive testing in low-Earth orbit, and reporters may have figured out just what is going on. According to Discovery News, the United States Air Force will be heading on a mission to space this week. On Wednesday, May 20, the Air Force will launch the mysterious unmanned X-37B spacecraft at 10:45 a.m. from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.
The X-37B is a reusable, unmanned spacecraft that will hitch a ride on the United Launch Alliance Atlas V booster to carry out its fourth mission since 2010. Since that date, this X-37B and another identical ship have spent a combined 1,367 days in near-Earth orbit on three different missions. The last flight took place in December 2012 and didn’t land until October 2014. The X-37B holds the record for the longest mission by a reusable spacecraft at 674 days.
The spacecraft historically returns to California’s Vandenberg Air Force Base following its missions, but this time it is possible that the X-37B will land at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
