WASHINGTON: US border agents caught nearly 1.5 tons of marijuana being smuggled into the country at an Arizona border.
Mexican national Jose Enriquez-Anzar, 70, was driving an “empty” tractor trailer from Mexico to the U.S. when a non-intrusive inspection at the Port of Nogales’ Mariposa crossing found an anomaly inside the trailer.
A U.S. Customs and Border Protection narcotics dog found the 2,946 pounds of cannabis, which was packaged in 139 separate bundles, behind a false wall inside the trailer.
The border officers seized the drugs, which they valued at $1,473,000, and the tractor-trailer. Enriquez-Anzar was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, according to the agency.
The Mariposa bust comes less than a month after border agents at the same crossing seized 4,661 pounds (or $2.3 million) of pot.
