WASHINGTON: US coal production in the third quarter of 2014 totaled 255.3 million, a 3.9% increase over the previous quarter and a 0.9% decrease below the year-ago quarter, the US Energy Information Administration said.
Production in the Western Region, which represented about 54.2% of total US coal production in the third quarter of 2014, was 138.5 million st, a 5.4% increase over the previous quarter, EIA said in its Quarterly Coal Report.
US coal exports were 22.7 million st, a drop of 7.5% from second quarter and a decrease of 20.6% from third quarter 2013. Coal exports have declined for six quarters in a row, according to EIA data.
Steam coal exports in the third quarter averaged $67.10/st and totaled 7.5 million st, 14.5% lower than previous quarter. Metallurgical coal exports averaged $95/st and totaled 15.2 million st, 3.7% lower than previous quarter.
