OMAHA: (BUSINESS WIRE)–Werner Enterprises (NASDAQ: WERN), a premier transportation and logistics provider, is proud to announce it has received approval from the Department of Veterans Affairs to launch its Diesel Mechanic Apprenticeship Program.
“Werner is the first trucking company to have a nationally registered apprenticeship program for diesel mechanics, and we’re thrilled to lead the way,” said Derek Leathers, president and COO. “Werner has a long history of supporting our country’s military veterans, and we hope this apprenticeship program will serve as another great opportunity for these skilled individuals to build a career in the transportation industry.”
The new 36-month apprenticeship program means eligible veterans who have the Post 9/11 GI Bill can now receive up to $26,488.80 of their tax-free education benefits while working for Werner as a diesel mechanic, in addition to their Werner pay.
Werner has hired more than 6,500 veterans since 2012 and more than 350 veteran spouses since May 2013, surpassing the pledge it made in 2012 under the White House campaign Joining Forces to hire 1,000 veterans per year for the next five years. Werner has pledged to hire 2,200 veterans and 200 veteran spouses in 2015.
Werner Enterprises, Inc. was founded in 1956 and is a premier transportation and logistics company, with coverage throughout North America, Asia, Europe, South America, Africa and Australia. Werner maintains its global headquarters in Omaha, Nebraska and maintains offices in the United States, Canada, Mexico, China and Australia. Werner is among the five largest truckload carriers in the United States, with a diversified portfolio of transportation services that includes dedicated van, temperature-controlled and flatbed; medium-to-long-haul, regional and local van; and expedited services.
