NEW YORK: Dell has teamed up with Intel to free the docking station from this clutter with its new Wireless Dock. As the name suggests, the docking station eliminates the need for multiple cords thanks to Intel’s Wireless Gigabit (WiGig) technology. In fact it’s not a traditional “dock” at all, as you don’t even need to plug your laptop into anything in order for it to take advantage of the Wireless Dock’s capabilities.
You do, however, need a laptop, Ultrabook, or 2-in-1 convertible tablet with built-in WiGig support in order to have it communicate wirelessly with the dock and peripherals. More specifically, the current portables that work with the Wireless Dock are Dell’s Latitude 5000 and 7000 models that have Intel’s fifth-generation Core vPro processors installed with optional Tri-Band Wireless-AC 17256 enabled.
The Wireless Dock can handle a pair of external displays along with a mouse, keyboard, and audio, thanks to WiGig’s data transfer speeds, which are faster than those provided by 802.11ac WiFi-certified products. All data shared between your notebook and the dock are encrypted and secured with IEEE 802.11 authentication protocols.
The Wireless Dock is currently available through Dell’s website for $269.99.
