World’s smallest goanna lizard in Australia remained unchanged for 6-7 million years

PERTH: The world’s smallest lizard species that have only 16 grams weight, Australian scientist and researchers discovered in isolated area of the country. The lizard has remained almost unchanged for the past six or seven million years.
The new species is discovered by consultants Roy Teale and Greg Harold from Biota Environmental Sciences.
News reports from local media states that this new species of goanna lizard has been discovered from the Kimberly region. The Western Australia Museum also announced the discovery of new species.
The new species of ‘goana lizard’ has been named, ‘Dampier Peninsula Goanna’. The scientific name of this species is ‘Varanus Sparnus’.
The discovery of this species is considered as a very crucial discovery as it is the World’ smallest lizard species. This single genus has 77 species as of now, and with the discovery of new one, it became 78.
This new species grows to a maximum of 23 cms, and weighs only 16 grams. Other species of ‘goanna lizards’ have the capability to grow over three meters in length.
The group of ‘Goanna Lizards’ are known for its size. Australian desert-dwelling Perentie grows over a size of 2 meters, whereas the renowned Komodo Dragon which lives in Indonesia gains a length of 3 meters.
The Komodo dragon usually weighs up to 80 kilograms, and it is considered as the World’s largest lizard.
The world of science is now welcoming this 16 gram lizard to a family ruled by giants like ‘Komodo Dragon’ and ‘ Australian desert-dwelling Perentie’.
