1.24pc increase for lowest income group: SPI up 0.53pc; down 0.35pc on WoW

ISLAMABAD: The weekly Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) inflation went up 0.53 percent on year-on-year basis and deceased decreased by 0.35 percent this week as compared to the previous week.

According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) data, the SPI for the week ended on January 8, was recorded at 210.53 points against 209.43 points over the same period of last year, showing a 0.35 percent hike. Similarly, the SPI inflation decreased by 0.35 percent this week as compared to the previous week, coming down from 211.28 points to 210.53 points.

Average prices of nine items witnessed an upward trend while prices of 15 items registered a decrease. The price of 29 essential items remained steady during the week under review. The nine essential items whose prices registered increase during the week under review included onions, garlic, firewood, pulse Moong washed, tea prepared, Gur, rice basmati broken, sugar and red chili powder loose.

The 15 items whose prices witnessed decline during the week included chicken, LPG cylinder 11kg, tomatoes, potatoes, cooking oil tin, eggs, vegetable ghee loose, vegetable ghee tin, wheat flour bag, bananas, pulse Masoor washed, pulse Mash washed, rice irri-6 (Punjab/Sindh), mustard oil and wheat.

The weekly SPI has been computed with base 2007-2008=100, covering 17 urban centres and 53 essential items for all income groups. The SPI for the lowest income group up to Rs8,000 registered an increase of 1.24 percent during the week under the last week as compared to the same period last year.
