LONDON: The UK’s revenue and customs authority, HMRC, confirmed that the French authorities formally authorized HMRC to share the leaked HSBC Swiss data with other law enforcement officials and regulators to pursue wider offences. HMRC said that it had made 1,000 requests for data on UK taxpayers last year, the maximum possible under Britain’s deal with Switzerland.
The UK’s parliamentary Treasury Select Committee is grilling HSBC bosses over the Swiss tax scandal and HMRC officials.
According to The Guardian, HMRC CEO Lin Homer said that tax officials will hold their first meeting next week to plot their next move. The newspaper reports that until now, the UK was restricted to only use the data from the list for tax purposes only.
