100th birthday of Dr Norman E Borlaug: Postage stamp launched to pay tribute

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Post has launched a postage stamp on the 100th birthday of Dr Norman E Borlaug, the father of green revolution to pay tributes to great scientist in recognition of his services in the field of agriculture.

Pakistan Post launched Rs8 denomination commemorative stamp at the National Agriculture Research Council (NARC).

Federal Minister for Food Security and Research Sikandar Hayat Khan Bosan, Secretary of Ministry Seerat Asghar, Chairman PARC, Dr Iftikhar and representatives of various national and international agriculture organisations witnessed the launch.

With the smiling portrait of the scientist and lush green wheat fields pictured in the background, the stamp symbolises food secure future and end to starvation through the development of agriculture with coordinated efforts and utilisation of innovative technologies. Pakistan in April 2014 established Borlaug Institute of South Asia at National Agriculture Research Council Islamabad to promote services and acknowledge great scientist.

Sikandar Bosan said although the agriculture scientists have been successful in developing new varieties through research but these results were not reaching to the farmers. Their still exists a big gap between the research and its practical application by the farmers, which needed to be bridged to enhance the agriculture productivity, he said.
