ISLAMABAD: The government has taken immediate and concrete measures to add some 1,100 megawatts of electricity to the national grid by this summer.

These additional megawatts would be generated through refurbishment of the Guddu Thermal Power Station by enhancing its capacity from 900 MW to 1,500 MW and about 450 MW from Chashma Nuclear Power Plant (Chashma III) and wind power plants, official sources told APP here.

They said that recently about 270 MW was added to the system from Guddu station from the 415 MW Siemens block comprising two gas turbines and one steam turbine.

Earlier, the entire Guddu plant had stopped generation in 2013 due to damage to its gas and steam turbines. However, a contract was awarded to an Iranian firm, MAPNA for rehabilitation of the 415MW Siemens Block plant at Guddu with strict timeliness. Rehabilitation work started on the plant in November last year, they said.

The first and second gas turbines have already started power generation, the sources said. They said another General Electric gas turbine was also under rehabilitation and it would add 100 MW to the system shortly.

Another 450 MW of electricity was also expected from Chashma Nuclear power plant and some wind power plants before summer, they said.

Some 120 million cubic feet per day (MMCFD) of natural gas had also been allocated to the Guddu Power Plant from the Mari gas field and aggressive work was in progress for installation of compressors to utilize the gas.
