SYDNEY: Ford has launched a new 2015 Mondeo to Australian ahead of a showroom launch set for May 1. Not only are they smaller and more efficient, they’re more powerful.

Leading the charge with cleaner and meaner power plants is Ford, which exploded on to the unleaded scene with the mega 1.0 litre EcoBoost.

Voted world engine of the year, this three-cylinder turbocharged motor proved such a hit it was promoted from the Fiesta to the mighty Focus.

Priced from $32,790 for the entry level Ambiente hatch and ranging up to $49,340 for the top-spec Titanium wagon, the new Mondeo is aimed right at Toyota’s segment-leading Camry ($30,490) and the popular Mazda6 ($32,540).

Two versions of Ford’s 2.0 litre EcoBoost turbocharged petrol engine will be offered with the new Mondeo, along with a 2.0 litre turbo diesel.

Entry models are driven by a 149kW/345Nm version of the petrol engine, while mid-range and top-spec models get a more powerful 177kW version.

All diesel variants are powered by a 132kW/400Nm 2.0 litre engine.

Although a manual transmission is offered in overseas markets, a six-speed auto is the only transmission on offer in Australia.

Fuel consumption ranges from 5.1 to 5.3 l/100km with diesel models and 8.2 to 8.5 l/100km in the petrol line-up.

Three familiar trim grades are offered across both the hatch and wagon ranges, opening with the Ambiente, through to the mid-spec Trend and the top-shelf Titanium.

Highlights in the new range include Ford’s SYNC2 infotainment system matched with an 8.0 inch touch display, along with Emergency Assistance, Adaptive Cruise Control, adaptive LED headlamps and a Wi-Fi hotspot, Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection and MyKey.

The new Mondeo is also the first Ford in Australia to feature nine airbags, including inflatable rear seat belts, across the entire range.
