NEW YORK: The Smart Fortwo 2016 has been unveiled at the New York International Auto Show on April 1, as did the car’s North American release date, late autumn 2015.

The smart city coupes you’ll see in dealerships around that time will have a slightly wider track than the outgoing fortwo; a more powerful 88-horsepower three-cylinder with five-speed manual or six-speed dual-clutch trans; and, stylistically, a refresh that gives the smart a more “purist character.”

The host of features standard with the 2016 fortwo include crosswind assist and Bluetooth; forward collision warning and lane keeping are optional.

Taking a look at this open top variant of the next generation ForTwo from Smart, the car features a similar visual design to that of its fixed roof counterpart. Of course, the only difference is that this one also comes with a folding canvas roof that can be operated electrically. The canvas roof has been derived from its predecessor and so have the side bars, which can be manually removed.

Owned by Daimler, the automaker Smart has already made an official announcement that it is going to release the 2016 ForTwo Cabrio model sometime this year. The company has also confirmed that the car will be coming with a 1.0L naturally aspirated engine that delivers either 60 HP or 71 HP of power output. Yet, for a beefier engine, customers can always go for the 0.9L turbo engine that has a total power output of 90 HP. The car will be coming with a 5-speed manual gearbox as standard whereas a 6-speed dual clutch transmission system will be optionally available as well.

According to reports, there is even a Brabus variant of the model currently in the works. This one will allegedly come with a retractable canvas roof, too, in addition to a 0.9L turbo engine that delivers a total power output of 120 HP.
